Who Invented The Lightbulb?

The first artificial light was a fire. Nowadays we have the light just by flicking a switch. But who invented the lightbulb which we all use today?

Lightbulbs are made from a glass bulb containing a filament, which is a thin piece of wire usually made from metal alloys such as tungsten. The filament produces heat by resistance to the flow of electric current. This heats up the filament and causes it to glow giving out light.

We can not imagine our life without lightbulbs.

So, who invented the lightbulb?

The one we consider as the one who invented the lightbulb is:

Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison is the one who invented the lightbulb in 1879. After more than 3000 tests, he finally found that a thin metal filament inside the bulb glowed and lasted for hours when electricity passed through it. He also invented the first long-lasting electric lightbulbs, which were much better than any other inventors who attempted to make an incandescent lamp.

He worked very hard and he deserves his title as the one who invented the lightbulb.

Of course, Edison didn’t work alone.

There were many who contributed to the invention of the lightbulb, including Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, who made a carbon filament in 1878. However, Thomas Edison developed the first long-lasting electric light bulb with his team of inventors who worked for 10 years before he got it right! He even created an entire system to provide power for his bulbs. This system is what you see when you flip on a switch. It wasn’t until the late 1880s that Edison could offer people to buy his invention, which was expensive at first.

In 1904, General Electric was the first to patent a method of producing tungsten filaments. It wasn’t until 1916, however, that the firm launched a tiny light bulb with a coiled filament wire produced from tungsten.

Today, Edison’s invention of the lightbulb is one of the greatest inventions in the history of modern civilization. His first carbon filament lamp lasted for 40 hours! Nowadays we have stronger, longer-lasting bulbs that are much more efficient than ever before.

Types Of Lightbulbs Today

Modern lightbulbs come in different types, including Incandescent, Fluorescent, Halogen, and LED.

Incandescent bulbs are the most common type of lightbulbs today that you use in your house. They come with a thin filament wire inside the bulb that glows when electricity flows through it. The thin filament is made from tungsten metal alloy wire to produce heat energy so it can glow and emit light.

Incandescent bulbs produce light using electricity but they also give off heat energy too which wastes a lot of power when compared to other types of modern lightbulbs.

Fluorescent lights are another common type of modern lightbulb. You’ll find them in homes, offices, or any building where they need bright lighting conditions for extended periods of time. They are thinner than Incandescent lightbulbs, so they fit easier in some fixtures.

They work by coating the inside of a glass tube with special chemicals called phosphors. When electricity runs through these chemicals, they release invisible ultraviolet energy which attaches itself to the thin metal wire filament at one end of the tube which makes it glow too without producing heat energy. This makes Fluorescent lights much more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs when you need to use them for extended periods of time.

Fluorescent lightbulbs come in different shapes and sizes depending on where you want to install them in your home. They usually come with an integrated ballast along the top of the light fixture that provides power to make them light up.

Halogen lights are another type of modern lightbulb that you’ll find in homes, businesses, and other buildings around the world. They give off a bright white light that people can see from far away which makes them great for street lamps. Halogen lights have been called the most efficient incandescent bulbs ever invented!

They work differently than Fluorescent or Incandescent lightbulbs because they don’t use a thin metal filament wire inside them to produce their energy. Instead, they have a capsule filled with halogen gas and a piece of tungsten wire at the center of it all. When electricity passes through this capsule, it heats up the wire until it produces an intense light beam that shines through a special lens made of fused quartz. These special lenses help control the direction of light produced by halogen bulbs so they can give off more focused beams that are useful for street lights, spotlights, or car headlights.

LEDs are also another modern type of lightbulb that people have started using in their homes and buildings. LEDs stand for Light Emitting Diodes which is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. LEDs emit various colored lights like red, blue, green and yellow depending on how you connect them together to create different designs and patterns with your LED lighting system.

Modern manufacturers use different materials to make LEDs including GaN (gallium nitride), InGaN (indium gallium nitride), AlGaInP (aluminum gallium indium phosphide) which are all semiconductor compounds that emit light when electricity is used to power them. LEDs last for years before they stop working which makes them very long-lasting and reliable too!

LEDs stand out from other types of lightbulbs because they don’t have a filament wire inside of them that can burn out or break over time like other bulbs. This type of technology has been around since the mid-1960s according to led lighting history documents that even say “Back in 1968, a group of physicists at Standford University were trying to create an LED device that would work as a traffic signal. Even though their first attempt failed, they didn’t give up and eventually created the very first working LED light.”

LEDs don’t contain any toxic chemicals either so you can install them in your home for years without worrying about hurting the environment or anything else!

Finally, we have another type of modern lightbulb that is quickly gaining popularity around the world called the Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb better known as CFLs. Instead of containing a thin metal filament wire like Incandescent lightbulbs do that can easily break over time, CFL light bulbs instead have a glass tube filled with an inert gas along with mercury vapors at one end. When electricity runs through this small amount of mercury inside the fluorescent bulb, it emits ultraviolet light that then produces visible light which shines through a special lens at the other end of the tube.

CFLs stand for Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs because they are usually very short and small compared to regular Incandescent or FLuorescent lights so you can easily install them in tight spaces around your home without having to worry about them sticking out too much. If you have kids running around your house though, CFL is not recommended due to how fragile they can be if they were accidentally dropped on the ground.

Fluorescent bulbs work similarly to LEDs by emitting colored lights including blue, green, yellow, and red depending on the chemical compound used inside of them but they don’t last as long as LED lighting systems do. In fact, they can only emit light for around 10,000 hours or so before they burn out completely which is much less when compared to LEDs that last for years when used correctly.

In September of 2008, the United States Congress passed a law in the Energy Independence and Security Act where all old-fashioned Incandescent lightbulbs were phased out beginning in 2012 by Energy Star certified CFL light bulbs instead. By 2014, Incandescent lights became completely illegal so it’s best to use LED lighting systems in your home for safer and better lighting quality overall.
