Henry Moseley

In 1913, Henry Moseley invented the atomic battery. His invention of the atomic battery had a significant impact on the world.

The battery was a spherical glass globe containing a radioactive radium emitter within. A charge was built up due to the emitted charged particles, which were deposited on the silver and generated a buildup of charge. This resulted in the formation of an electric current from the atomic battery.

Henry Moseley, who is often known as the father of modern physics, proposed that given a chart of the positive elements, it may be possible to deduce which chemical element has the most significant number of subatomic particles and therefore would be found at the end of any period. He believed that atoms existed until further division would result in no more atoms. 

His research ranged from x-rays to his discoveries about who discovered uranium rays.

He also developed Moseley’s law, which states every element has its unique characteristic x-ray.

History of atomic batteries

After the invention of the first atomic battery in 1913. came a lot of improved versions. The first atomic battery was a prototype and unsuitable for commercial applications.

In the 1930s, it was used as a source of radioisotopes in experimental treatments that involved the use of radioactive material being introduced into biological systems. During World War II, atomic battery development was used as an energy source for remotely deployed sensors.

Since then, at least two more atomic battery versions have been developed by scientists who are currently looking into how to improve this invention with regards to its performance and limitations. 

The atomic battery is still undergoing research and exams, so there is no current model available in the market yet.

Types of atomic batteries

The type of atomic battery that Henry Moseley, who invented the atomic battery created was a novelty. Today, there are three types of atomic batteries:

Spherical Atomic Battery

A Spherical Atomic Battery consists of a radioactive emitter encased in a glass sphere with two metal terminals on either end. When current from an outside power source flows through the electrical circuit, it builds due to ionization. It charges the spheres’ terminals at opposite polarities, creating voltage. This occurs because charged particles that emanate from radioactive decay have been deposited onto one terminal while being attracted to the other terminal because its polarity is opposite their charge.  

Radium-Handling Paper Tape Atomic Battery

In this experiment, you can make your who invented the atomic battery at home. To create the battery, you will need to cut off a small piece of masking tape and stick it onto a narrow strip of paper for ease of use. You then fold the long end of the paper and attach it to itself so that both ends are stuck together.

Next, with a sharp knife or safety scissors, carefully scrape along one side of the tape so that it is completely covered in tiny pieces of metallic radium paint. Place your finger on top of this pile and turn over so that your palm faces up. 

With tweezers held by an adult, gently sprinkle some freshwater onto your who invented the atomic battery as you lift it to your who invented the atomic battery. The radium will stick to the paper in much the same way iron filings are attracted to a magnet. Now take another piece of tape, but this time only partially cover it in paint. Repeat step two and then fold over all four sides of your who invented the atomic battery.

He was a theoretician who explained the value of x-rays in imaging and used them in the war to inspect ammunition on the front line. 

He was able to determine which element was inside an alloy by punching out tiny pieces of metal and analyzing the x-rays they gave off – allowing him to determine what elements were present without performing a time-consuming chemical analysis. 

Due to his role in World War I, he became one of the youngest scientists ever knighted when he came back home from the front lines.  

However, at age 28, during a routine morning experiment with radium vapor Henry Moseley himself succumbed to burns caused by radiation poisoning. His works are currently stored in The Royal Society research library in London. They include some of his original manuscripts for this book.
